米Red Hat社，Enterprise Linux 5ベータ版を公開

従来版（RHEL4）に比べ，
（1）仮想化ソフト「Xen」を組み込んだことと
（2）ネットワークにつながったどのパソコンにおいてもユーザー独自のデスクトップ環境をサーバーから呼び出して使える「ステートレスLinux」機能を組み込んだこと，
が大きな違い。
このほか，インストーラやカーネル・ドライバ・モデルの改良，iSCSIなどのネットワーク・ストレージ対応，といった強化点がある。

Beta 1は，RHEL4とは異なり，サーバー版とクライアント版がそれぞれ別のISOファイルで公開された。サーバー版は，
（1）フェイル・オーバーやWebのロード・バランサを実現するクラスタ機能，
（2）GFS（Global File Syste）を用いたストレージ用途のクラスタ機能，
（3）Xenを用いた仮想化，の機能を含む。
サーバー版のインストール時に，これらの3つの機能から選択して組み込むことができる。
