米Red Hatは3月14日(現地時間)、これまでベータ版の提供が行われてきた「Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5」の正式リリースを発表した。Fedora Core 6をベースにした企業向けリリースの新版では、仮想化(バーチャライゼーション)環境のサポートにXenを採用し、デスクトップ環境の Enterprise Desktopの強化も行われている。

RHEL 5 では、『SELinux』を実装することでセキュリティ面も大幅に改良している。SELinux はカーネル上で強制アクセス制御を行なうため、プログラムに対して動作するのに必要最小限の権限だけを与えることができる。全体のアクセス制御を強化すれば、セキュリティが向上するという考え方に基づいている。
これとは対照的に、これまでの REHL にはアプリケーション配備のためのターゲットを絞ったポリシーを網羅したリストがないため、SELinux の実装は困難だと考える人が多かった。
